In social media, negative self-talk makes us feel that we aren't on our A-game or perhaps that we don't look as good as we should. The thing is, you're sabotaging yourself and your business.

Negative self-talk is those words that come to mind and that voice that pops up in your head when you try to do something and get deterred. Arianna Huffington refers to that voice as “the obnoxious roommate” living in your head.

I work with clients, all of the time, that tell me that they can't do things, that they don't have the time or that they don't know how. These are the same people that embarked on the entrepreneurial journey because they believed they could make a living doing what they love. Every day they wake up to beat the odds of success and to carry on for another day, yet when it comes to social media marketing it's that effort that stems a series of excuses that “the obnoxious roommate” capitalizes on.

I get it.

There are days that I know I need to jump on camera and live stream to an audience. And, there are days that I don't feel like it. The obnoxious roommate in my head chimes in with the thoughts of doubt, and a series of excuses that permit me to skip out on my marketing for the day. You know those thoughts, they sound something like this:

“You're not having a good hair day”
“The lighting isn't flattering for your complexion”
“You look tired”
“You don't have the right equipment”
“You don't have anything to say”
“You really should be doing laundry”
“Nobody sees your posts, anyways”

And, I”m sure that you can think of a bunch of other thoughts that cross through your mind when you don't want to do something.

Here's the reality of being an entrepreneur…
… you're often doing things that you don't want to do because you know that they're the best thing for your business.

And, social media marketing is good for your business.

So, how do we evict that obnoxious neighbor so that we can make the most out of our marketing efforts?

First, you need to acknowledge it.

Take a step back and listen to what that voice is saying at that moment so that you recognize it quickly when it comes again.

Second, get over it!

Your mind is INCREDIBLY POWERFUL!

If you've ever played sports, then you know how powerful it is to visualize the game before the game is even played. Visualize yourself hitting that ball, making that goal, or crossing that finishing line. Imagine yourself holding that trophy. It's powerful because you've mentally prepared yourself to be in a positive state. A winning state.

If you've ever encountered an obstacle, and as an entrepreneur, I'm sure that you've faced your fair share, and you've pushed through it to achieve a positive outcome, it's your mind that helped you problem solve and empowered you to persevere

Your mind allows you to accomplish anything you'd like to achieve, so why do we fight the need to build our brand, to put ourselves out on social media? Stop it. Get over that fear of not being the perfect spokesperson to promote your business because you are just that – The Perfect Person.

It's your dream, share it.

Third, start doing it.

One of the best ways to get over that little voice in your head and evict that obnoxious neighbor is just to start doing it.

When creating content for your social media marketing, especially if it's a live video, remember that it's more important that you get your message out then it is to have your hair perfect. People won't care what you look like if you're sharing tips to help solve their problem, remove their pain – or make them happy.

I once read, “imagine where you'd be a year from now if you started today.” I challenge you to start today. Stop listening to that voice and know that your message needs to get out if you expect people to support your business. And, social media is the perfect vehicle for that.

Social media marketing allows you to connect with others who find your presence valuable and are drawn to you for who you are and what your message is, unlike that obnoxious neighbor who wants to sabotage your efforts by focusing on insecurities.

So, go ahead. Embrace who you are in that moment and be willing to write about it, talk about it, record a video about it and share it with people who care.
