So what do online marketing and peas have in common?
Imagine a delicious dinner plate filled with your favorite foods. And, on that plate is a serving of these beautiful green peas. But, you’re not really hungry, or perhaps you simply don’t like peas. So, rather than eat the serving, you begin to push them around the plate with your fork. Since the tidy serving of peas has been scattered around the plate, the illusion is that there are fewer peas on the plate.
It looks as if we’re eating, it looks like something is happening, but the reality is you have the same amount of peas that you had to begin with, and nothing is getting done.
Here’s the thing, pushing peas doesn’t only exist on a dinner plate, but it also serves as a perfect metaphor for business. When I think of an entrepreneur who is pushing peas, I think of somebody who has got a lot of ideas and yet isn’t executing any of them, because of the sense of feeling overwhelmed. And when I think of pushing peas in marketing, I ‘m reminded of the entrepreneur who wants to be everywhere but is doing everything so half-a$$ed that they’re not really doing anything to market themselves effectively. Think about it, you know this person. Maybe it’s a friend, maybe it’s you?
Here are three things that you can use to move your marketing forward, and avoid pushing those peas around your marketing plate.
1. Commit to doing more videos.
Despite all of the changes Facebook is making, the one thing they’ve said time and time again is that they are favoring video in their newsfeed. If you’re afraid of being on camera, you’re not alone. There are a lot of different services that allow you to create beautiful videos affordably. But, if you’re comfortable (or semi-comfortable) having a conversation, then the easiest way to create a marketing video for Facebook is to jump on and do a Facebook Live Video.
It’s easy, really! All you do is select “Live” as your post type and the countdown begins.
Remember, Facebook still favors Live video, so why not show up on Facebook in a way in which they prefer to showcase you?
ACTION ITEM: Jump on a few Facebook Live videos this week, and tell your friends why they should care about your business.
2. Commit to reaching out via email.
The second thing you can do, is to take a good look at your emails. Reach out to people, reach out to prospects, reach out to friends, families, current customers, current clients, and reach out to them via email. Let them that you care about them.
Yes, people receive a lot of emails. Yes, people may or may not read them. But, one this is for certain, if you don’t send an email, then it definitely won’t be read. For every person that complains that they receive too many emails and therefore don’t read them, there’s a person who considered email as their preferred method of contact. So, whatever your personal beliefs about email are, set them aside and consider your audience.
Don’t discount the power of a perfectly timed email.
ACTION ITEM: Commit to emailing your list once a week for a month. Don’t sell in the email, instead give them value. On the final email, invite them to have a conversation with you.
3. Commit to reaching out to people in person.
Reaching out to another person, in person, has almost become a lost art. Yet, you know pretty darn well that having an actual voice to voice conversation with another person is EXTREMELY powerful. Remove technology and agree to meet with someone in person. Have a conversation. Listen to them. Offer to help them. Establish rapport. Become someone of value to them. If you do this, then you’ll win the bid – every time!
